Conducting research in primary care, sharing knowledge and shaping healthcare – working together for a strong general practice.
FoPraNet-BW strengthens general practice care through research. Clinical questions arising from day-to-day practice are developed in collaboration with GP practices, patients and members of the public, and addressed in high-quality scientific studies. The findings are incorporated into everyday practice, improving care whilst also providing new impetus for further research. This creates a continuous cycle in the spirit of a learning healthcare system, which closes gaps in the evidence base and strengthens general practice in the long term.
We are building a strong research network to advance knowledge in general practice and to tangibly improve the quality of care for patients. In doing so, we always act in accordance with the highest ethical, legal and scientific standards.
As part of the BMBF-funded project „FoPraNet-prevent“ (Project code: 01GK2504A-E) will see the existing IT infrastructure expanded by 2031 to include a permanent register for obesity and its prevention. The aim is to facilitate future register-based studies in order to improve GPs’ preventive care for obesity and associated complications and comorbidities directly within everyday practice. The register is designed to be sustainable and will continue to operate even after the end of the current funding period.
Under the motto „Outpatient research – linking knowledge – shaping care“ FoPraNet-BW carries out local and nationwide studies in general practice settings. This includes its own projects as well as collaborations, for example with partners from the DEGAM-ForNet initiative. Each research practice decides individually, based on its own interests and available capacity, whether to take part in studies.
General practice research teams form the cornerstone of this initiative and act as a crucial link between academia and the reality of healthcare provision. Their expertise enables practice-oriented research that is tailored to the real-world needs of everyday clinical practice. Based on clear eligibility criteria, GP practices at their respective university sites are accredited as academic research practices. New practices are always welcome!
In preparation for their research work, the clinical teams (GPs and medical assistants) will, in accordance with the „Research-Ready Concept“ provides practical training through the DEGAM-ForNet. In addition, the PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) approach engages patients and the public in FoPraNet-BW. To this end, individuals are provided with targeted training so that they can actively support research projects and the interpretation and dissemination of study results in future.
The practical relevance of our research questions is ensured by incorporating all perspectives – from medical practices, patients and university teams right through to expert and advisory boards. Through forms of communication and participation tailored to needs, the experiential knowledge of all those involved is utilised to the full and incorporated into the projects in a targeted manner.
