On 5 and 6 May 2023, the FoPraNet-BW consortium held a two-day research symposium organised by the Initiative of German Research Practice Networks (https://www.desam-fornet.de) The theme was the development of a suitable infrastructure to harness the potential of practice-based research in GP practices across the country. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for such a patient-centred and scientifically sound data infrastructure in order to be able to obtain reliable clinical information from the field quickly in future. The symposium was attended by 38 experts from six research networks comprising a total of 23 university institutes of general practice, Reutlingen University, the German Foundation for General Practice (DESAM) and the Technology and Methods Platform e.V. (TMF). The participants discussed and developed specific, efficient structures and practical processes to address supraregional research questions on patient care based on the existing local general practice landscape.
